Dejected Chelsea players after losing yet another game. When will the ‘promo’ end?
Story by Dili Utomi.
The word promotion in marketing terms means a message issued in behalf of some product or some cause or idea or a person or an institution, but in Nigerian street lingo, it has developed another connotation.
Promotion or promo in the lexicon of the average Nigerian sport, particularly football follower also has a negative connotation, it simply means giving freely and willingly without prejudice or inhibition.
Another loss.
This brings us to the object of all the above expatiation and that is the Chelsea Football Club of London England, a club that this writer and many more people around the world support.
In the 2022-2024 season, the club has spent huge amount of money to a record amounting to over Six Hundred and Thirty Million Pounds (£630,000.00) to sign new players in order to remain competitive and win more laurels for the club fondly called the pride of London by supporters.
In spite of the best efforts of the new owner, Tom Boehly in providing the needed funds and the signing of known good players and again firing two coaches within eight months of the ten month season so far, the club is having it’s worst performance in 28 years.
Chelsea’s latest record shows that out of the 32 matches played, she has only won 10, drawn 9 and lost a total of 13 matches, thereby having 39 miserable points out of a possible 96 points meaning that she has only managed 1.22 points per game. Chelsea is currently 11th on the Premier League table and the situation is that of a great nightmare to all fans of the club.
In consideration of the abysmal performances of the club, which has also seen her exiting from every other competition she has been involved with this season, a lot of the Nigerian fans of the club are wondering aloud when this nightmarish ‘promo’ from our darling club to other Football Clubs is going to stop. They are also questioning the commitment of the new owner, Mr. Boehly in moving the club away from this seeming doldrums and make her the very competitive Juggernaut that she has hitherto been.
