The economic stress imposed by the novel covid-19 pandemic seem not to affect the sagacious tenacity of the Apapa Command of the Nigeria Customs Service over the past month of April as the Command has been able to surpass its previous performances in terms of revenue generation by realising an unprecedented sum in the month under consideration.
The Customs Area Controller of the Command, Comptroller Yusuf M.I. in an address to the press revealed that “The Command in the month of April 2021 collected revenues to the sum of sixty-five billion, four hundred and sixty-three million, three hundred and ninety-eight thousand, three hundred and fifty-five-naira, eighty-five kobo. (N65,463,398,355.85). This clearly shows an increase of twenty-five billion, five hundred and eighty-five million,
five hundred and sixty-one thousand, one hundred and thirty-nine naira, ninety-two kobo (N25,585,561,139.92) when compared to the collection of the same month in the year 2020, indicating a percentage increase in collection of 64.%”. The feat is unprecedented.
It is also noteworthy to mention that the Command did also perform very well in the area of anti-smuggling activities as it made a seizure of 4x40ft containers laden with unregistered pharmaceuticals (674 cartons of tramadol tablets in 225mg and 120mg, and 805 cartons of codeine syrup in
100ml) at APMT and Sifax 3 bonded terminals respectively and these imports contravene the laws of the land.
The CAC also detailed other seized items in the period under review as: 2 containers of unprocessed wood,1 container of scrap copper wire. Exportation of the above items is in breach of schedule 6 (items 4 & 6) of the Common External Tariff (CET).
The Duty Paid value of the seized items stood at one billion, seven hundred and sixty million, five hundred and six thousand, three hundred and sixty-three naira (N1,760,506,363.00).
Comptroller Yusuf praised the commitment of his officers and the support of his principal, the Comptroller General of Customs, Hameed Ali as he continues to ask for the support of all stakeholders including the press so as to achieve increasing revenue generation by the Command and also to reduce smuggling to its barest minimum.
