There is a lot of brouhaha brewing and about to erupt owing to the supposed stiffneckedness of the management of the AP Moller Terminal (APMT) located within the Apapa Port Complex in Lagos, this is due to the seemingly intractable problem occassioned by the breakdown in negotiations over working conditions between the management of the Terminal and the officials of the Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN).

A press statement signed by the president-general of the Union, Comrade Adewale Adeyanju and its general secretary, F S Akingboye and released this evening by the Union clearly gave a pointer to a probable withdrawal of services at the terminal by the members of the Union.

The statement read in part “Unfortunately, we are forced to bring to the notice of the general public that after series of meetings, this last one being the 4th, the meeting like the several others ended in stalemate. This is as a result of the refusal of the management of the APMT to concede to worker’s demand for an appropriate and industry compliant increase in their salaries across board. On this note, a seven (7) day ultimatum was issued and which has since expired”.

It will be recalled that the central Maritime workers body has for sometime now engaged the authorities at the APMT in order to normalise some of the discriminatory policies of the company which tend to favour the employment of foreigners as well as giving them better working conditions to the detriment of their Nigerian counterparts and the management of the terminal has obviously remained resolutely adamant about conceding to the worker’s demand

The Union therefore is making it clear that it has not been left with much choice other than to embark on a strike action as the press statement concluded by saying that “Consequently, the Maritime Workers’ Union of Nigeria should not be held liable in the event of the distruption of industrial peace at the APM Terminal”.
