A tragic and horrendous occurrence happened around 8.00pm on Wednesday at the check point manned by the Joint Border Patrol Team, otherwise known as the Border Drill, a combination of the Customs, Immigration, Directorate of State Security, Army and Police.

An 18 tyre, 40 foot flat bed trailer truck with registration number AGL 999 XZ conveying some iron rod for construction towards Idiroko ran into the Team’s check point at Ajilete, destroying life and property in the process.

An unfortunate victim of the accident.

The leader of the Team at the check point is CSC Salisu MT of the Nigeria Customs Service, he said that at about 8.15pm, the truck lost control and ran into the trees beside the check point killing four civilians and injuring more officers. He named the injured officers as ASC1 Babalola, the pilot Gbenga, a police officer Marin, ASC1 Mu’azu, DSC Ibrahim who got a slight knock and several others. He described the occurrence as a great tragedy. One of the dead persons was the truck motor boy who was ironically trying to wave people away from the road as the vehicle’s breaking system had failed. The motor boy was said to have fallen of the truck as the vehicle hit the trees, he fell of and was subsequently mangled by the tyre under the heavy weight of the truck beyond recognition. According to CSC Salisu, this particular victim was only identified with the clothes on him.

One of the injured officers, DSC Ibrahim who was sitting inside his vehicle with another officer by the side of the check point described his escape from the incident as divine, he said that he temporarily lost his rifle in the process, but later recovered it after the ordeal. The vehicle that he was sitting in with his colleague was badly damaged by the impact of the truck and will require extensive repairs.

A look around the scene of the accident will present a picture of a road construction area where the forest has just been cleared by a bulldozer machine, this is because stumps of felled trees were scattered there with the trunk and branches of one of the trees still hanging on the trailer truck.

It was an unfortunate occurrence that may have physically affected the officers of the JBP Team in Ajilete area of Ogun State, but it surely did not look a bit like their spirits have been dampened, this is because as the press men were busy speaking with them, the officers were still doing their job as if nothing had happened and officer Ibrahim was preparing to head to a place where a tip has been got about smuggling activities around their area of jurisdiction.
