The Ndigboamaka Progressive Markets Association, the Umbrella body of all major markets associations in Lagos has absolved itself of any involvement in the proposed shutting down of markets in Lagos for two weeks by a group known as Nzuko Ndi Igbo Di Na Ala Lagos as a direct fallout of the 2023 elections.
In a telephone conversation with the
general secretary of the umbrella body, Comrade Chinedu Ukatu this weekend he stated that “Our attention has been drawn to the letter circulating on social media and purportedly signed by unknown persons or group. We want to use this medium to alert all Market leaders affiliated to our association and the general public to disregard that same letter”.
The response which clearly stated that “As at the last time we checked, the group is neither the authorised mouth piece of Igbos nor are they authorised to speak on behalf of Market Associations. We are not unmindful of some injustices meted out to some of our people during and after the 2023 elections, but closing of markets or shutting down businesses are not in consideration as an option for now. We have to explore other options towards engaging the authorities as regards this matter”.
The purported letter.
According to the Secretary General of the association, Comrade Chinedu Ukatu “However if we must have any need to shut down businesses which we deem not necessary, we would inform all the relevant authorities and the general public shall be notified by the Associations”.
“We don’t have any intention of shutting down any market in Lagos and within Nigeria as a whole. We appeal to the general public to totally disregard such letter, we urge our members to continue their normal businesses.”
