The choice of most members of the Nigerian labour unions to embrace the tenets of democracy in the selection and administration of their unions/associations played out on Tuesday as the Dockworkers Branch of the Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria organised an election for the Lagos Haulage District of the Union. The election which took place at the Annexe Secretariat office of the Union within the Brawal Terminal at Kirikiri witnessed a large crowd of members who attended the occassion.

In an opening address by the President-General of the Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN), Comrade Adewale Adeyanju, he urged members to continue to act with the dignity and unity that is required to make the Union stronger. He advised winners in the election to have the mindset that in all human endeavours, you must always have the good, the bad and the ugly and so should have the desire and courage to bring out the best in all at all times. He also advised the new executive members to work with cooperation among all members in other to achieve the desired objectives.

The President of the Dockworkers Branch of the Union, Comrade Tajudeen Ibrahim Ohize who was also the electoral committee chairman of the election also spoke exclusively with us after the election and said that “The action of electing officers into the Districts takes place every four years and that he is glad that the day’s election has been smooth sailing and successful”. He said not that though most of the elected officers were elected unopposed, that it was because of the caliber and clout of the individuals who contested the election. He also pointed to the wild jubilation after the election and swearing in of the new executive members to buttress his point. Commerade Ohize said that he expects nothing but success from this executive members over the next four years because as a pressure group, their laws are strong enough to aid them to aim for the welfare of all members and that the members are ready to offer their unalloyed support to the new executive team. The President advised those that are aspiring to become executive members that it is not a bread and butter affair and that they must be honest and then work very hard to be accepted before considering to contest any election. He advised them that the Union is not a political organisation and that it is not a place to go and embezzle money and so the interest of anyone who desires to be in the executive should be about serving the people.

The new Vice Chairman of the Lagos Haulage District of the Dockworkers Branch of the Union, Mr. Patrick Onyegbule also spoke with us at the end of the election and said that it is a good day and that for the next four years of their mandate, they will seek to bring all members together. He said that being a unionist entails that you work with the mindset that an injury to one is an injury to all as he also advised those aspiring for leadership position to be patient and to work diligently harder.
The new executive members of the Haulage District Lagos comprises of Com. Taofeek Shorinola as chairman, Com. Patrick Onyegbule as the vice chairman, Com. Francis Okechukwu as secretary, Com. Bright Uwalaka as assistant secretary, Com. Hassan Muse as treasurer, Com. Adegboye Olaoluwa as 1st organising secretary, Com. Joseph Ideh as the 2nd organising secretary, Com. Lookman Adebayo as NEC member, Com. Doris Nwala as financial female member, Com. Abiola Adeshina as the 1st trustee, Com. Bright Idehuhu as 1st auditor, Com. Ganiyu Ayinde as 1st welfare officer, Com. Friday Nweke as 2nd welfare officer, Com Emmanuel Rotimi as ex-officio, Com. Adekunle Martins as ex-officio.
