The AIG in charge of zone 6 police command, Calabar Usman Sule Gomna.
Story by Dili Utomi.
The reported cases of acts of impunity around the police operations that led to the protest that rocked the nation in 2020 seem not to have left such lasting lessons as the Assistant Inspector General of Police in charge of Zone 6 Calabar in Cross River State, Mr Usman Sule Gomna has been alleged to have illegally arrested and detained Engr. Collins Igwe the Regional Manager of the Port Harcourt Electricity Distribution (PHED) Plc.
Engr Igwe who was said to have in the cause of his normal duty incurred the wrath of the AIG over the disconnection of electricity to the police Zone 6 command for their failure to pay their electricity bills of over N31m owed the DisCo since last year.
It was gathered that the AIG invited Engr Igwe to a meeting with his team to discuss the way forward on their indebtedness to PHED so that power could be restored to the zone.
It was unfortunately reported that as the PHED men arrived the station, he ordered his men to arrest and detain Engr Igwe boasting that he will not release him until power is restored to the zonal police station.
It was also gathered that all attempts to get the AIG to release the PHED staff who acted in lawful authority fell on deaf ears.
Our source complained that, this is one of the public office holders who abuse the privilege of their office to undermine Nigerians who go about their normal cause of business. He also chided the AIG Gomna for not only bringing shame to his exalted office by not paying his electricity bill but also forcefully and illegally arresting an innocent Nigerian.
The PHED authorities say that as a Disco, they are letting Nigerians to know that electricity is not a right or privilege but rather like every other service must be paid for. They advised the AIG to therefore save himself further embarrassment by ensuring that he pays his bill like every other Nigerian.
