NIGERIAN IMPORTERS AND EXPORTERS TO BENEFIT IMMENSELY FROM INLAND DRY PORTS – FG

There are indications that the threat of the withdrawal of services by members of the Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN) an affiliate of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has jolted some operators in the oil and gas industry known as the International Oil Companies (IOCs) to take action and that the proposed strike action by the members of MWUN may not go on as initially planned.

The reason for this suspicion is the urgent meeting between the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA), representative of the IOCs, the members of MWUN and other stakeholders in the Maritime Sector which took place at the NPA office. A source who is privy to the meeting stated categorically that the IOCs has seen reason to bow to the resolute will of the Maritime Workers and quickly agreed to have a meeting which will form the catalyst for ratifying the agreement reached at earlier meetings and then bring a stop to the 4-year old labour inpasse.

As at the time of filing this report the outcome of the meeting was yet unknown, but there seems to be a lot of faith in the possibility of the meeting ushering in a breath of fresh air and calmness on this particular issue. We are there awaiting the outcome of the meeting as people anticipate with bated breath, the resolution of the disagreement.
