The federal government’s recent redesigning of the naira paper notes was aimed at achieving certain policy and economic objectives. The policy has also been variously praised for the problems that it will solve as they say that the policy has been somewhat long overdue.

The members of the freight forwarding community have also been supportive of the federal government’s intention on this matter, but the implementation of the policy has seemingly left sour grapes in the mouth of many as Nigerians are facing shortage of cash and also not having ready access to to their money owing to additional poor internet services.

In the light of these developments, some freight forwarders, specifically the Association of Nigerian Licenced Clearing Agents (ANLCA) are asking for transparency, accountability and probity in the way the banks are carrying out the disbursement of the newly redesigned notes and the recall of the old ones.

According to the public relations officer of the Tin Can Island Chapter of the association, comrade Onome Joy Monije, all freight forwarders/clearing agents are asking for the daily records of the new notes disbursement from the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) to each of the commercial banks in order to really know where the problem lies.

They are also asking that the internet services at the various ports be upgraded in order to make for more seamless online services and more competitive way of doing business. They complain that downtime is becoming a more reoccurring phenomenon and that this does not augur well for their businesses and so the process should be made more efficient. The freight forwarders therefore ask members to get software application in their devices where they can generate invoice and readily pay Customs duties, shipping companies and terminal operators rates from the comfort of their home or office and get receipted without any third party.

The statement by the PRO also added that the freight forwarders really do commend the president of the country for his steadfast determination to achieve the stated objectives that the naira redesign policy is meant to achieve, but that the implementation of the policy should be properly monitored as the present realities make it more difficult for businesses to thrive.
