The ongoing litigation battle between an agreed faction that show allegiance to the erstwhile Board of Trustees Chairman, Taiwo Mustapha of the Association of Nigeria Licensed Customs Agents and those belonging to the head of the National Executive Committee and the President of the Association, Honourable Iju Tony Nwabunike seems to be taking a rather devious turn as every kitchen utensil seems to be thrown in the squabble.

The recent publication by an online news media over a purported judgement in one of the court cases has drawn the angst of the Vice President of the Association, Dr. Kayode Colin Farinto. The case concerns the election organised by the former BOT Chairman’s faction which a Badagry, Lagos Court is hearing. The online publication stated that the President’s faction of the Association presented fake documents hence the judge ruled in favour of the opposing faction. Dr. Farinto stated that this report was not just false as the judge is yet to rule on the case which is about the legitimate legal representative of the Association, but also a case of junk journalism.

He also spoke about the recently organised Emergency National Executive Committee meeting as he thanked the press for the coverage of the event. The Vice President went further to say that the case of the expelled members at the ENEC meeting was that of the decision of the majority of the members of the NEC who voted overwhelming by 42 votes as against 7 to expel the erring members. The NEC members of the Association includes the President and his executive members, the chapter chairmen and their executive members, the BOT members and members of the various committees. A total of 9 members were expelled by the NEC members on the day of the meeting, but the committee that was set up to investigate the activities of these recalcitrant members initially recommended that they be suspended.

Dr. Farinto also berated the management team of the Nigeria Customs Service as he called them incapable of doing a proper job of trade facilitation. He said that up until now, there is no policy statement on the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) on the way forward by the Nigeria Customs Service. He advised that whoever is advising the Controller General of Customs should advise him to engage stakeholders in order to fashion a proper policy framework for the Customs on AfCFTA. He aslo condemned the incessant slamming of alert and other excessive rates on Customs brokers and stakeholders. He recalled that his Association has put up a document advising for the dissolution of this management team because they lack idea and it led to members being invited to Abuja. Dr. Farinto lamented that Nigeria is loosing businesses to neighbouring West African countries.
