The modern trend in any business environment is that one should not just know the nitty gritty details of your job, but also that it should be matched with the necessary application techniques as well as skillful management of the most vital aspect of the job, the human resource.

The above preamble is necessary to give a direction to the subject at hand, this is because this reporter has quietly noted a few outstanding things about the person of the Officer in Charge at the Clarion Terminal at Alakija, Lagos, Deputy Controller Mohammed Usman Bappa.

A cursory look at the record shows that as at the end of May 2020 when he took over at the Terminal, a total of Eight Hundred and Seventeen Million, Seventy Seven Thousand, Five Hundred and Twenty Two (#817,077,522.00) Naira was realised as revenue for the month while for the Month of April 2021, a total of One Billion, Seven Hundred and Seventeen Million, Four Hundred and Eighty Six Thousand, Five Hundred and Ninety Nine (#1,717,486,599.00) Naira was realised. This is a 67.7 percent increase over that of the Month of May 2020. The single goods declaration for the Month of May 2020 stood at 1231, while that of April 2021 stands at 3016. These are simple testaments to the prudent hard work that DC Bappa and his team are putting in.

A quiet investigation shows that the work ethics within the Terminal has greatly changed from the lethargic to the constant zeal to perform, the shoddy way of documentation has given way to careful and detailed fervour, the apparent lack of direction has given way now to proper focus and mental alertness, low morale among the officers has given way to high morale and cheerful mien.
The renewed enthusiasm has brought about fresh impetus in the way and manner that the one hundred percent examination of containers and items are now carried out and very importantly, the level of compliance by importers and licensed customs agents/freight forwarders has greatly improved as the relationships with all stakeholders has reached an all time most cordial, this has in turn made all the associations to ask members to key into the renewed vigour that is presently engendering better productivity within the Terminal.
We also observed that the O/C terminal entertains complaints from stakeholders who constantly freely go into his office to iron out issues as DC Bappa operates an open door policy and this seems to be one of the major reasons why he is making tremendous impacts as the head of the Terminal.
